TORONTO -- Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz was scratched from the lineup about 30 minutes before Sunday's 5-3 win in 11 innings against the Blue Jays due to lingering soreness in his left foot after being hit by a pitch on Saturday.
Boston's star slugger is day to day, but he hopes to return for Monday's opener of a four-game series in Baltimore.
The good news is that Ortiz feels far better than he did at a restaurant on Saturday night, when a friend had to help him up from his chair.
"That's how bad it was hurting," said Ortiz. "That's the foot that has been giving me issues, right around that area. But I iced it and did a bunch of different things and I'm not limping much like I was when I first came in. So I think it was good."
Red Sox manager John Farrell added that X-rays on Ortiz's foot came back negative.
Ortiz actually offered at the pitch by Toronto right-hander Marcus Stroman in the fifth inning on Saturday and was charged with a strikeout.
Ortiz was able to stay in Saturday's game, and he even clocked a home run -- his all-time leading 40th lifetime at Rogers Centre for a visiting player -- to give the Red Sox the lead in the top of the ninth inning of an eventual 10-9 loss.

"That's how it normally works," said Ortiz. "After you cool off, that's when you start really feeling it. In the game I was fine, but then last night, went for dinner, and I was sitting down for like an hour and I needed help to get up. I was limping badly."
Even at the age of 40 and playing in what is expected to be his final season, Ortiz has been a force for the Red Sox, hitting .339 with 13 homers, 46 RBIs and a 1.140 OPS.
