Peralta opts for year-ending shoulder surgery

SAN FRANCISCO -- The D-backs learned Tuesday that they must continue their long-shot bid for a Wild Card berth without left fielder , who decided to undergo season-ending surgery on his inflamed right shoulder.

D-backs manager Torey Lovullo tried to remain upbeat, pointing out that Peralta will be recovered enough to participate in next year’s Spring Training workouts on time with his teammates.

Peralta will travel to Cincinnati to have orthopedist Tim Kremchek perform the procedure Friday. Lovullo said Peralta has “debris” in his AC joint that is causing the inflammation and discomfort.

Lovullo spoke with Peralta on Tuesday and indicated this wasn’t an easy decision for the 32-year-old.

“I could tell that he was down,” Lovullo said. "It sounds like he did some soul-searching.”

A healthy Peralta slashed .293/.352/.516 with 30 homers and 87 RBIs and won a Silver Slugger Award last season. This year, while going on the injured list twice to try to treat his ailment while avoiding surgery, he was limited to 99 games while slashing .275/.343/.461 with 12 home runs and 57 RBIs.

“It’s a very difficult time for Dave and us, because we’re going to miss him,” Lovullo said. “Only David knows the pain that he was negotiating and all those times he was by himself to try to make it go away.”
