Wright 4th among NL third basemen on All-Star ballot
Captain out of action with spinal stenosis; other Mets players need votes
NEW YORK -- David Wright hasn't played since April 14, but that hasn't stopped Mets fans from supporting him on the 2015 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot.
Wright currently places fourth among National League third basemen with 327,319 votes, MLB announced Wednesday. A seven-time All-Star, Wright trails St. Louis' Matt Carpenter, the Cubs' Kris Bryant and Cincinnati's Todd Frazier at the hot corner. Wright sits more than 17,000 votes ahead of Colorado's Nolan Arenado.
The Mets' all-time leader in hits, doubles and RBIs, Wright was hitting .333 through eight games before injuring his hamstring. He has since dealt with setbacks and a separate back injury that's been diagnosed as spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal column. He is currently undergoing treatment with a back specialist in California. It is unclear when he will return this season.
Wright is the only Mets player currently in the Top 5 in All-Star voting at his position, but not the only candidate for the game. Shortstop Wilmer Flores is tied for the Major League lead with seven home runs at the position. First baseman Lucas Duda hit his seventh and eighth home runs Wednesday. And New York also has several impressive young pitchers who could warrant All-Star nods.
Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com and all 30 club sites -- on their computers, tablets and smartphones -- using the 2015 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot until Thursday, July 2, at 11:59 p.m. ET. For the first time, voting is exclusively online, where fans may submit up to 35 ballots.
