David Wright and Matt Harvey are headed to the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field
Major League Baseball today announced that Mets third baseman David Wright was elected by the fans to start the 84th All-Star Game to be played at Citi Field on July 16. Righthanded pitcher Matt Harvey will join Wright on the National League All-Star team. Harvey was named to his first All-Star team in a vote by managers, coaches and players.
Wright received 6,411,381 votes and will become the second Met to start an All-Star Game in his home ballpark. Ron Hunt started at second base when Shea Stadium held the 1964 Midsummer Classic.
Wright was selected to his seventh All-Star team (2006-2010, 2012-2013), which is tied for the second-most in franchise history with Mike Piazza and Darryl Strawberry. Tom Seaver was named to nine All-Star Games with the Mets. This year will mark the fifth time (2006-2007, 2009-2010, 2013) Wright has started for the National League, tying Strawberry for the second-most in team history. Piazza started six All-Star Games for the Mets.
Harvey became the fourth pitcher in club history to make the All-Star team in his first full season in the majors. He joins Seaver (1967), Jerry Koosman (1968) and Dwight Gooden (1984).
Harvey could become the third Mets pitcher to start an All-Star Game. Gooden started the 1988 All-Star Game at Cincinnati and the 1986 Game at Houston. Seaver started the 1970 All-Star Game in Cincinnati.
Mets Manager Terry Collins will serve on the NL's coaching staff for the second straight year and the third time in his career. He was also a coach for the NL team last year at Kansas City and in 1995 at Texas.
Mets Head Trainer Ray Ramirez and Mets Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jim Malone will both work for the NL team.
