Day 2: 2015 San Francisco Giants First-Year Player Draft information
GIANTS DRAFT SELECTIONS: The San Francisco Giants have selected 11 players through the first two days of the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. To date, the Giants have selected four right-handed pitchers, two left-handed pitchers, three infielders and two outfielders.
FROM THE COLLEGE RANKS: The Giants selected 10 of their first 11 draft picks out of the collegiate ranks. San Francisco's only high school selection so far was their third round pick, Jalen Miller out of Riverwood International Charter School (GA).
GIANTS SELECT BICKFORD WITH THEIR FIRST ROUND PICK: The San Francisco Giants selected College of Southern Nevada right-handed pitcher Phil Bickford with the 18th overall selection in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft. The 2015 Golden Spikes Award Semifinalist posted a 9-1 record with a 1.45 ERA (14er, 86.2ip) in 16 starts this season at College of Southern Nevada. Bickford struck out 166 batters compared to just 21 walks in 86.2 innings of work. He recorded 10-or-more strikeouts in eight of his 16 starts. The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder was impressive during the 2014 summer in the Cape Cod League, as he allowed just two runs and struck out 44 batters in 27.2 innings of work. Bickford received the Russ Ford Award, as the most outstanding relief pitcher and the Robert A. McNeese Award, as the league's top prospect.
GIANTS SELECT SHAW WITH THEIR SUPPLEMENTAL PICK: The San Francisco Giants selected power-hitting first baseman, Chris Shaw, with their supplemental draft pick, the 31st overall selection. The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder hit 11 home runs in his first 32 games of the season for Boston College, prior to breaking his hamate bone in his right hand. Overall, he hit .319 with a .611 slugging percentage and a .411 on-base percentage. He was named to the Second Team All-ACC, despite missing time due to his injury. Shaw led the Cape Code League last summer with eight home runs and ranked second with 34 RBI, while recording a .275 (46-for-167) batting average. He was honored with the Cape Cod Baseball League's John J. Claffey Award as the New England Top Prospect playing for the Chatham Anglers.
GIANTS SELECT SUAREZ IN THE SECOND ROUND: With the 61st pick in the draft, the Giants selected left-handed pitcher Andrew Suarez out of the University of Miami. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound redshirt Junior went 9-1 with a 2.96 ERA (26er, 79.0ip) and 74 strikeouts in 14 starts this season. He was named a third-team All-ACC selection for the second straight season.
NOTES FROM DAY 2: In the third round today, San Francisco selected SS Jalen Miller from Riverwood International Charter School (GA). The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder hit .444 (28-for-63) with 20 runs scored, 17 RBI and 11 extra-base hits (four doubles, two triples and five home runs) in 22 games during his Senior year. With the 126th overall pick the Giants chose LHP Mac Marshall out of Chipola College, who went 5-2 with a 2.37 ERA (8er, 30.1ip) in nine starts last season. In the fifth round, the SF selected CF Ronnie Jebavy out of Middle Tennessee State University. The 6-for-2, 192-pounder recorded seven outfield assists, which were tied for ninth in the country and his defensive prowess has been displayed on ESPN's SportsCenter, where two of his outstanding web gems have been ranked No. 6 and No. 4 on the show's Top 10 Plays of the Day segment.
FAMILY TIES: With the 216th pick in the seventh round, the Giants selected third baseman Jose Vizcaino Jr., son of former Giant Jose Vizcaino, out of Santa Clara University. Vizcaino played two seasons at shortstop for the Giants (1997 and 2006).
