Dietrich among young Marlins feeling optimistic

MIAMI -- Treat every day like a new beginning has been a message Marlins manager Mike Redmond has preached, and that has hit home for the young players.

Derek Dietrich is one of the rookies gaining valuable on-the-job training each day at second base. Even though the team has been losing, Dietrich sees the club showing signs of making progress.

"I think everyone is turning the page and really grinding," the 23-year-old said. "I think good things are going to start happening."

Scoring runs on a consistent basis remains an issue, but approaches are improving and players are feeding off each other.

"I think it all starts really going up there from the first pitch and being ready to play and grind and compete," Dietrich said. "Guys notice. We're starting to play better baseball. These last couple of games have been close. I know we haven't gotten wins, but we're playing good ballgames. We've just got to keep competing. We play hard every day, for sure."
