Avila sits out at camp due to back tightness

Miggy rests sore right foot; Hanrahan yet to throw since cutting 'pen session short

LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Tigers had enough trouble with injuries last Spring Training that they could justifiably get nervous when Alex Avila had to sit out Friday's workout with back tightness. This injury, however, doesn't appear to be severe.

Manager Brad Ausmus said Avila, who had minor back issues last season as well, is considered day to day.

At this point in camp, all Avila missed was a day of live batting practice, and most of the pitchers throwing Friday were Minor League invitees or prospects.

Miguel Cabrera took a day away from the treadmill on Friday to rest his sore right foot. Cabrera had been running on the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill daily since it arrived at Joker Marchant Stadium on Tuesday.

Ausmus said Cabrera, who was cleared for baseball activity last week while he rehabs his surgically repaired foot, played catch in the abbreviated workout Friday.

• Joel Hanrahan has not yet resumed throwing since cutting his bullpen session short last week with soreness in his right arm. He continues to work out with the club, but there are no plans for now to get him back on a mound.

It's a holding pattern for Hanrahan in his effort to get back to pitching two years after undergoing Tommy John surgery. The 33-year-old is in camp on a Minor League contract, and he said earlier this week he could end up staying in Florida for extended spring camp.

Hanrahan did get a minor victory Friday, when he defended his ragball fielding championship from a last-minute challenge by previous champion Joba Chamberlain. Hanrahan won the title Monday, the day before Chamberlain signed.
