PHOENIX -- Brewers pitching prospect Devin Williams is headed for a second opinion from noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews over concerns about a right elbow injury, the team said Saturday.
The Brewers did not say what the initial diagnosis was, but it came after Williams underwent an MRI scan earlier this week. After he visits Andrews, Brewers head physician Dr. William Raasch and Andrews will collaborate on the next step.
Williams is No. 19 on MLBPipeline.com's list of the top Brewers prospects. He felt pain while pitching in a Minor League intrasquad game Tuesday and was examined on Wednesday by Raasch.
Though he was drafted in the second round, Williams was the Brewers' top pick in 2013 because they had surrendered their first-round selection to sign free agent Kyle Lohse. Williams has a 3.79 ERA and 288 strikeouts in 287 professional innings.
Williams fought an injury in each of the past two springs as well. His regular-season debut in 2015 was delayed until May 16 because of a forearm flexor strain. In 2016, he didn't pitch until May 12 because of a minor shoulder injury. Williams then went 7-5 with a 3.79 ERA in 22 games, 10 starts, between Class A Wisconsin and Advanced Class A Brevard County.
