Dickerson gets second PCL honor; AFL rosters set

Tuesday was another busy day in the Padres farm system.

Poway High product Alex Dickerson added another honor from the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, the Padres set their rosters for the Arizona Fall League, low Single-A Fort Wayne moved closer to the Midwest League title and El Paso lost a game in its bid to win the PCL Pacific Southern title.

A review:

-- El Paso left fielder Dickerson, 25, was voted the PCL Rookie of the Year award a day after he and right-handed closer Jon Edwards were voted to the season-end all-PCL team.

Dickerson, who is hitting .307 in his first Triple-A season, is the second Padres prospect to win the award created in 1998. Third baseman Sean Burroughs won in 2001. Coincidentally, Dickerson was also voted the Double-A Eastern League Rookie of the Year in 2013 while in the Pirates organization.

A third-round pick by the Pirates in the 2011 draft out of Indiana University, Dickerson was acquired by the Padres in a trade after the 2013 season.

Dickerson 36 doubles, nine triples and 12 home runs this season for 71 RBIs and 82 runs scored. The 6-foot-3, left-handed hitter has a .374 on-base percentage and a .503 slugging percentage. He ranks 10th in the PCL in batting average, third in runs scored, fourth in extra-base hits and second in triples.

-- The Padres are sending seven players to the Arizona Fall League, including center fielder Travis Jankowski who is currently with the Major League roster and could be substituted from the AFL if he plays a lot during the final month. Other Padres prospects headed to the AFL are infielders Gabriel Quintana and Fernando Perez, right-handed starting pitcher Elliot Morris and right-handed relievers Michael Dimock, Eric Yardley and Ryan Butler.

-- Fort Wayne (74-58) scored a 6-4 win at Lansing to retain a four-game lead in the second-half Eastern Division standings with six games to play. The TinCaps magic number is three as they start a three-game, head-to-head series Wednesday night at second-place Western Michigan. Fort Wayne (44-22 in the second half) has already clinched a playoff
berth.

Designated hitter Franmil Reyes (.247) was 4-for-4 with two homers Tuesday night. Second baseman Rey Bruguera (.200) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Left fielder Franchy Cordero (.243) was 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. First baseman Trae Santos (.263) was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.

Left-hander Jose Castillo was promoted from short-season Single-A Tri-City to make Tuesday's start when left-hander Thomas Dorminy was placed on the temporarily inactive list due to a death in his family. Castillo (1-1, 4.09 earned run average) allowed three runs on three hits and five walks with two strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings to get the win.

Right-handed reliever Aaron Cressley (4.31 ERA) allowed a run on three hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Left-handed reliever Kyle McGrath (1.73) struck out one in a perfect inning for his third save.

-- El Paso (73-64) suffered an 8-7 loss at Las Vegas to fall 1 1/5 games behind the 51s with six games to go in the PCL season. A win Tuesday night would have boosted the Chihuahuas into the division lead.

Right fielder Hunter Renfroe (.339) was 2-for-5, including a three-run homer that was his sixth home run in 14 games since being promoted to Triple-A.

Left fielder Rymer Liriano (.285) was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and his 12th and 13th homers of the season. Catcher Rocky Gale (.307) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Second baseman Ramiro Pena (.315) was 3-for-5 with a double.

Left-handed starter Jason Lane (10-10, 5.80 ERA) had an RBI single with the bat but allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts in four innings to suffer the loss. Right-handed reliever Jerry Sullivan (4.60) allowed two runs (one earned) on a hit and a walk with a strikeout in four innings as the Chihuahuas committed four errors, who proved to be the difference in the game.

Dimock (1.15) and right-hander Jay Jackson (2.37) each had a strikeout in a perfect inning.

Earlier in the day, the Chihuahuas lost right-handed relievers Nick Vincent and Marcos Mateo to recalls to the Padres.

AROUND THE FARM:

DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (57-77): Midland 4, MISSIONS 2 - 3B Quintana (.333) had his third homer in two games, a two-run shot. 3B Duanel Jones (.229) was 2-for-4 with a run scored. 2B Benji Gonzalez (.235) and LF Alberth Martinez (.278) were each 2-for-5. Starting RHP Bryan Rodriguez (4.36) allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts in six innings. LHP Brandon Alger (3-6, 3.86) allowed a run on two hits and a walk with a strikeout in an inning. Yardley (9.00) allowed a run on two hits and a walk in two innings.

HIGH SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (47-87): Rancho Cucamonga 8, STORM 5 - CF Wil Myers was 1-for-3 with a walk in his first rehab start. C Miguel Del Castillo (.200) was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a RBI and a run scored. 2B Perez (.219) was 3-for-5 with a run. LF Nick Schulz (.241) was 2-for-4 with a run. Starting LHP Travis Radke (0-4, 9.11 ERA) allowed seven runs on nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. RHP Blake Rogers (6.23) allowed two hits with three strikeouts over 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

SHORT-SEASON SINGLE-A TRI-CITY (37-34): DUST DEVILS 8, Vancouver 6 - CF Rod Boykin (.249) was 2-for-3 with a RBI. 2B Kodie Tidwell (.250) was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. 3B Carlos Belen (.224) was 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored. C Austin Allen (.232) was 2-for-5 with a RBI and run scored. Starting RHP Emmanuel Ramirez (1-1, 3.32 ERA) allowed a run on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in five innings. LHP Elvin Liriano (2.36) allowed an unearned run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. RHP Nathan Foriest (0.00) struck out one in a perfect inning. RHP Phil Maton (1.47) allowed a hit and a walk while striking out three in a scoreless inning for his sixth save.
