Dodgers activate Puig from disabled list

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers reinstated outfielder Yasiel Puig on Saturday from the disabled list. Puig had been hampered by a right hamstring strain. Puig has been out of the lineup since Aug. 27, and he has played in only 77 games this season due to a variety of injuries.

Puig was in the lineup on Saturday night and went 1-for-3 with a bloop single to right field in the Dodgers' 2-1 win over the Padres.

"It looked like a guy that hadn't played in awhile," manager Don Mattingly said. "He got a hit, we didn't get that many, and he had one of them."

Mattingly said that Puig won't be in the starting lineup on Sunday, and Puig said he would be ready to pinch-hit or double-switch into the field.

"I'll be ready regardless, whatever they need me to do," Puig said. "I've been preparing well. I feel very prepared for the playoffs." 

"I think really this is a couple days to see what he can do and see where he's at. We haven't set any rosters yet," Mattingly said. "It kind of fits from the standpoint of [Scott Van Slyke] being hurt and having some days here kind of cracks that door for him."

With the move, the Dodgers have 39 players on the active roster. Puig figures to be auditioning for a spot on the postseason roster. A spot may have opened up for the 24-year-old as Van Slyke reinjured his right wrist and could be out for the postseason.

Van Slyke will keep his wrist in a splint until Sunday and then will be evaluated early next week to see what he's able to do with the postseason coming up.

"It's something he's been playing with and it's something that's crept up on him a little bit," Mattingly said.

Worth noting

Second baseman Jose Peraza is still at the Dodgers' extended spring facility and doesn't figure to be in the the team's plans for the National League Division Series. He's also rehabbing a hamstring injury.

"If he was going to get back for this round, he would have been here," Mattingly said.
