CHICAGO -- The Dodgers announced on Tuesday that left-hander Alex Wood will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with swelling in his pitching elbow and that highly touted prospect Julio Urias will be recalled to take his spot.
Wood, pitching on eight days' rest after being skipped once in the rotation, started Monday's opener at Wrigley Field. He had a solid outing despite taking the loss, allowing two runs in five innings and working out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the second inning, but indicated after the game that he was still dealing with soreness in his left arm.
"It was OK," Wood said. "It was good enough to pitch. Everybody deals with stuff. It was one of those things that I was good enough to go, and that's all that matters."
Manager Dave Roberts said the decision to put him on the DL was made because of lingering soreness. Wood will head back to Los Angeles for an MRI.
"We gave Alex a few extra days his last turn, and after [Monday's start] he just had some discomfort," Roberts said. "[Tuesday] morning he woke up with more of the same, so it just made sense to get him back to L.A. and get more tests done. ... It's just more precautionary, but we're hoping for the best."
Wood's placement on the DL clears a return to the Majors for the 19-year-old Urias, who made his Major League debut last Friday against the Mets.
The Dodgers' top prospect as ranked by MLBPipeline.com, Urias allowed three runs in 2 2/3 innings in his debut, striking out three and walking four on 81 pitches. He was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City after the game.

A player can't be recalled for 10 days after being optioned unless there is an injury to another player, and Wood's situation created that scenario, though it's unknown when Urias will next pitch.
The Dodgers are also monitoring the pitching hand of right-hander Kenta Maeda, who was struck with a line drive during his last start. There is a possibility Maeda's next start might be skipped. Urias could start Thursday's finale against the Cubs or on Friday at home against the Braves.

"Yeah, that's some of the thought, just seeing where Kenta's at," Roberts said. "Julio is a Thursday [or] Friday thing, so we'll see where he's at."
Worth noting
• According to Roberts, Andre Ethier (fractured right tibia) isn't ready to resume baseball activities yet. When Ethier was injured on March 18, the estimate for his return was between 10 and 14 weeks. The 10-week mark was May 27, but the injury hasn't healed enough.
"I look back and, gosh, I remember thinking it was going to be a few days' thing, to where we're at right now," Roberts said. "I know Andre wants to be back. We've exchanged text messages, but I really can't forecast when his return is. I don't know."
• The Dodgers designated infielder/outfielder Alex Guerrero for assignment after his rehab assignment ended. They have 10 days to release or trade him, or place him on waivers. Guerrero, 29, sustained a knee injury during Spring Training and hasn't played this season. He hit .136 during his rehab stint.
• Trayce Thompson returned to the lineup on Tuesday after missing two games with a back issue that forced him to leave Saturday's game in the fifth inning.
"I think it was just a mild strain," Thompson said. "I haven't really had it happen before. I was available the last couple days, so they just wanted to give me some rest. I just took some swings just now, so it's feeling pretty good."
