LOS ANGELES -- In a pitching matchup of Cy Young winners, former teammates and friends, Clayton Kershaw fired a four-hitter for 8 1/3 innings while Zack Greinke misfired as the Dodgers beat the D-backs, 7-1, Friday night at Dodger Stadium.
Kershaw fell two outs shy of his 16th career shutout and 25th complete game when Chris Owings doubled home Chris Iannetta with one out in the ninth. Kershaw struck out eight, retired 10 consecutive batters before Owings' fourth-inning single and 12 more batters after that.
"I felt fine, but you can't give up hits in the ninth inning if you want to finish," said Kershaw.

Greinke, who allowed the Dodgers eight runs in 4 2/3 innings at Dodger Stadium last year, this time was touched for five runs on 10 hits in five innings.The Dodgers, 1-for-24 with runners in scoring position over the three previous games, were 3-for-8 against Greinke.
"We got hits with guys in scoring position," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. "We had a great game plan against Greinke and took advantage of some mistakes."

Greinke got Kershaw on a double-play grounder to end a 31-pitch second inning and escape a bases-loaded jam, but the Dodgers strung four hits in the third inning for a pair of runs driven in by Adrian Gonzalez and John Forsythe. Justin Turner's two-run double with two outs in the fourth inning doubled the lead, while Yasiel Puig's sacrifice fly in the fifth extended it to 5-0 and Alvin Toles barreled a two-run homer in the eighth.
"I just think overall it wasn't our greatest day," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "It was a situation where we got pitched to and they out executed us."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Seeing eye: Of the Dodgers' four consecutive singles in the third inning, the most critical one was Turner's, which instead of becoming a double-play, bounced perfectly between third and short into left field, sending Corey Seager from first to third. According to Statcast™, it had a hit probability of 14 percent.
"It's a messed up game," said Turner. "I hammer a ball in the first inning and it's an out and you hit one of those and get a hit. It's crazy."

Caught looking: For the first time since Sept. 13, 2013, Kershaw had no strikeouts after two innings. But on his third of the game he caught Yasmany Tomas looking with one out in the fourth and runners on second and third. Turner made a short-hop grab of Brandon Drury's bouncer to end the threat. Six of Kershaw's eight strikeouts were called.

The Dodgers challenged the safe call after a play at the plate on Arizona runner Chris Iannetta by umpire Doug Eddings in the ninth inning. The call stood and the run scored.

D-backs:Patrick Corbin will start for the D-backs on Saturday night at 6:10 MST as they continue their four-game series with the Dodgers. The left-hander is coming off an outstanding start against the Indians in which he tossed six shutout innings.
