LOS ANGELES -- Recent trends in the National League West continued Tuesday night, as the streaking Dodgers beat the slumping Giants in the opener of their showdown three-game series at Dodger Stadium, 9-5, extending L.A.'s division lead to two games.
Rookies Andrew Toles (three RBIs) and Rob Segedin homered for the second consecutive game, while Adrián González also drove in three runs -- two on a tiebreaking, bases-loaded single in the fifth inning off losing pitcher Madison Bumgarner (12-8), who allowed a season-high five earned runs in five innings.
"It was a big team offensive effort," said Gonzalez. "We just had good at-bats throughout the middle of the lineup tonight. We struggled early in the year, but now we're doing our part."
Toles, who came off the bench with a double before the home run, is 6-for-11 since July 31 after sitting out all last year. Segedin, called up Aug. 7, has 12 RBIs in 15 games.

Winning pitcher Kenta Maeda let two leads get away, but ended the fourth and fifth innings by striking out Bumgarner and Hunter Pence with runners in scoring position.
"For him to punch out Pence in the fifth, that was a fun sequence," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. "That was a spot right there, I wanted him to get Pence. I felt that was his hitter." 
Maeda (13-7) is 6-1 in his last eight starts and 7-2 against the NL West, although Roberts said his starter still needs to put hitters away more efficiently to pitch deeper into games. The Giants have lost Bumgarner's last five road starts. Despite allowing a homer to Denard Span, Kenley Jansen came on for his fifth four-out save this year, his 36th overall and first since Aug. 13. 
"Kenley's been our most rested reliever," said Roberts. "We've used Joe [Blanton, who retired all five batters he faced before Jansen relieved] a lot. As well as Joe has been throwing the baseball, I want him available tomorrow and maybe the next day."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Streaking: As the Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in first inning, Corey Seager and Gonzalez extended personal hitting streaks. Seager's reached 14 games with a double, and after Turner drove in Seager, Gonzalez extended his streak to 16 games with a single. Seager, Justin Turner and Gonzalez went 8-for-12 with four RBIs and three runs scored in the 3-4-5 spots of the batting order. 
"Bumgarner is one of the elite pitchers in baseball," said Roberts. "For us to grind out at-bats, get key hits and have traffic on the bases all night, that's a big lift for us." More >

Risky running: The Giants ran themselves out of a fourth-inning scoring opportunity. After Eduardo Núñez and Joe Panik drew one-out walks, both runners broke on the second pitch to Bumgarner. Nunez said it was supposed to be a hit-and-run, which meant that Bumgarner should have swung. But he took the pitch, and Nunez, the lead runner, was easily thrown out at third base despite his superior speed. Bumgarner then struck out to end the inning.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy called the incident a "miscommunication" and commented no further.

Translation, please? Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal, who speaks English and Spanish but not Japanese, was crossed up twice by Maeda, the first one resulting in a passed ball that allowed the tying runs to advance a base in the third inning. That resulted in a meeting on the mound that included pitching coach Rick Honeycutt and Maeda's translator Will Ireton, and the conversation resumed in the dugout when the inning ended with the score tied at 2-2.

Slipping away: With Dodgers on first and second and one out in the fifth, Turner loaded the bases by grounding an infield single toward third base that Nunez touched but couldn't pick up. He explained himself afterward, acknowledging that he initially thought he could record a forceout at third. But he misread the pace of the ball.
"As soon as I saw the ball just died, I had to run and go get it," Nunez said. "I thought it was [hit] hard enough to wait."
This set up Gonzalez's two-run single that broke a 3-3 tie.

Bumgarner struck out his 200th batter of the season in the fourth inning, becoming the fifth pitcher in Giants history to accumulate at least that many strikeouts in three or more consecutive seasons. Three of the others to accomplish this feat are Hall of Famers: Amos Rusie (1890-93), Juan Marichal (1963-66) and Christy Mathewson (1903-05). WHAT'S NEXT
Giants: Right-hander Johnny Cueto, who's scheduled to start Wednesday's rematch for San Francisco, regained his All-Star form in his previous outing by beating the Mets for his first second-half win. Cueto is 4-2 with a 2.43 ERA in his last seven starts against Los Angeles.
Dodgers:Rich Hill is scheduled to make his oft-delayed Dodgers debut in the 7:10 p.m. PT game at Dodger Stadium. Because of multiple blisters on the middle finger of his pitching hand that developed while warming up for what turned out to be his final start for the A's, the left-hander hasn't pitched in a game since July 7, so he figures to be on a short leash.
