CHICAGO -- The Dodgers placed outfielder Franklin Gutierrez on the 10-day disabled on Wednesday (retroactive to Tuesday) with a Grade I strain of the left hamstring, but they are optimistic third baseman Justin Turner (tight quad) will be back in the lineup on Thursday in the finale of the three-game series with the Cubs.
Turner said he first felt the discomfort after making a diving stop on a grounder by Chicago pitcher Jonathan Lester in the fourth inning of the series opener on Monday. He exited the game in the bottom of the eighth.
"It's like a charley horse," Turner said before Wednesday's game. "It just kept getting a little tighter and tighter. I probably could have stayed in and played there, but ... it didn't hurt anything to double-switch there with Chase [Utley].
"I think they're just trying to be cautious early in the year and give it that extra day. We'll see how it feels tomorrow."
Manager Dave Roberts said he expected Turner to be ready on Thursday.
The news on Gutierrez -- who left in the second inning on Monday after being thrown out attempting to steal second base -- wasn't as positive.
"It's something that he's had before; he felt it running," Roberts said. "Worst-case [scenario], three weeks; probably best-case, a week. It was best for us to have the coverage and put him on the 10-day."
The Dodgers recalled Trayce Thompson from Triple-A Oklahoma City to fill Gutierrez's roster spot.
"It's great to see him," Roberts said of Thompson. "That was one of those tough decisions at the end of Spring Training.
"It just made sense to bring Trayce in. Obviously, he performed for us last year. I don't know if it's a focus thing or a timing thing, but I expect to have him in the lineup [Thursday] and expect some good at-bats from him."

Baez likely to rejoin Dodgers on Friday
Right-hander Pedro Baez was scheduled to make his final rehab appearance Wednesday night at Triple-A. If all goes well, he should be activated before the weekend series with the D-backs at Dodger Stadium.
"He's going to do an up and down," Roberts said of Baez's rehab appearance. "It's going to be a situation where he gets an out to finish an inning and is down, and then will get an out or two on the back end.
"He'll join us after that. We expect to see him in Los Angeles. I think we plan on activating him [Friday]."
