Soreness 'normal' for Ryu after throwing bullpen

February 23rd, 2016

PHOENIX -- Hyun-Jin Ryu's soreness has the Dodgers feeling encouraged.
A day after his 30-pitch bullpen session Monday, Ryu and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spent 20 minutes discussing the pitcher's status.
"There's a difference between pain and normal soreness, and what we talked about this morning was normal soreness, and that's good because that's what you expect," Roberts said. "There's no concern. Anyone is going to have normal soreness, and if there wasn't any normal soreness then the intensity wouldn't have been there, so that's what we expected and hoped."
Ryu, who is recovering from left shoulder surgery that sidelined him for the entire 2015 season, is not expected to throw 200 innings in '16. It's also uncertain if he will be ready for Opening Day.
The Dodgers have not set a hard date on when they would like Ryu to start throwing his secondary pitches. Instead, they are focused on "upping the volume" of his fastballs.
