Peralta appears close to being activated

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers reliever Joel Peralta threw back-to-back rehab innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday and Friday and was slated to travel back to Los Angeles on Saturday, indicating a possible activation from the disabled list.

"I think there'd be a chance of that," manager Don Mattingly said of Peralta joining the club for its road trip in Chicago, starting Monday. "We just want to make sure he's OK and then we'll make a decision on where to go from there."

The 39-year-old right-hander has been on the 15-day disabled list since April 26 with a pinched nerve in his neck. In his two outings at Oklahoma City, Peralta allowed a total of two hits and one run. Peralta previously made three appearances with Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga.

The Dodgers have four relievers currently with Oklahoma City in various points of rehab. Brandon League has made six rehab appearances, and Pedro Baez completed his first rehab outing Friday. Paco Rodriguez made his third rehab appearance Saturday, allowing one hit and a walk while striking out the side.

With so many relievers currently on the shelf, Mattingly and the Dodgers have had to adjust their bullpen on the fly this season.

"It's been a little bit of a challenge. Coming out of Spring Training, we didn't quite know what we were going to get. So now you take four guys out of that mix and you're on to the next tier of guys," Mattingly said. "Maybe guys have Major League stuff, maybe at one point in their career they'll be an established guy that you can count on, but at this early point in their career, you don't really know what you're going to get on a daily basis."

In addition, starter Brandon Beachy will make his second rehab start, this time for Oklahoma City, as he continues to come back from his second Tommy John surgery. Beachy, who pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday, will be on a 45-pitch limit.
