LOS ANGELES -- After some discussion among the front office, Julio Urias will make a third start on Tuesday against the Rockies in what will be his Dodger Stadium debut.
The 19-year-old lefty scuffled in the first starts of his big league career, allowing a total of eight earned runs against the Mets and Cubs and not lasting past the fifth inning in either start. While those results are nowhere close to ideal, he still showed enough of the stuff that made him the No. 2 prospect in baseball to give him another shot.
"It's more of the way he was throwing the ball," manager Dave Roberts said. "He didn't get the results he would have liked his first two starts, but the way the ball comes out, the way he competes and handled himself in New York and Chicago, we want to see him again. We want to get another look at him and give him another opportunity."
Urias will at least be seeing a less fearsome foe than the Cubs at Wrigley Field, as the Rockies rank in the bottom five in the National League in OPS on the road. However, he will have to contend with a pair of right-handed hitters ranking No. 1 and 2 in NL home runs in Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story.
It's currently unknown what Urias' pitch-count limit will be. He was given a limit of 80 and 90 pitches, respectively, in his first two starts.
Worth noting
• Outfielder James Ramsey cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday. He was designated for assignment last week in order to make room for reliever Casey Fien on the 40-man roster.
• Howie Kendrick returned to the lineup for the first time since sustaining a shoulder injury playing first base on Wednesday. Scott Van Slyke (back), who was activated from the DL Friday, will get the start in left field Sunday.
"I want to keep Howie going, I think he's been swinging the bat well," Roberts said. "Scott will be out there tomorrow in left field. It's one of this things that's mixing and matching to get guys going. I got Scott in there last night, and he'll get a start tomorrow."
• Hyun-Jin Ryu has been playing catch at a distance of 90-120 feet, but the lefty who is recovering from left shoulder surgery has no timetable to return. He will have to make at least four rehab assignments before returning to the big league club.
• Brandon McCarthy will toss a three-inning, 60-pitch simulated game on Sunday. The righty, recovering from a right elbow injury, will need to do at least one more before beginning a Minor League rehab assignment.
