Dodgers lose challenge on call at home plate

Mattingly asks for review after Ellis ruled out on tag play in seventh

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers manager Don Mattingly lost a replay challenge on a play at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday.

Plate umpire Joe West called A.J. Ellis out at home trying to score from second on a bases-loaded pinch-single by Andre Ethier, batting for Justin Turner. Right fielder Hunter Pence made the throw and catcher Buster Posey the tag.

Mattingly asked West for a review, and the call was confirmed, ending the inning with the Giants leading, 7-2, which ended up the final score.

"If I score there, it might have led to a big inning," said Ellis.

The review was Mattingly's first challenge this year under the expanded replay system.
