Roberts will serve the suspension immediately, as disciplinary action taken against managers or coaches is not subject to appeal. The ejection was Roberts' third as a manager and his first this season. Bench coach Bob Geren will manage the Dodgers in Roberts' absence Saturday night.

"We talked through the pitching and certain matchups, other than that, I'll leave it up to Bob and Rick [Honeycutt, pitching coach] to navigate through the game."

Roberts drove to his Cardiff-by-the-Sea home 25 minutes north of San Diego to watch the game.

Friday night's clash stemmed from an accusation by Wood in the bottom of the first inning that Padres baserunner Jose Pirela was relaying pitch location to batter Manuel Margot from second base. Plate umpire Greg Gibson said Wood threatened "to drill" Pirela if he relayed signs again, prompting Gibson to confer with his crew before issuing warnings to both benches without explanation.

When the inning ended, Roberts, Green, Gibson and crew chief Sam Holbrook met behind the plate. At the end of the discussion, Roberts said he took offense to Green's "excessive" criticism of Wood and went after Green "to get his attention."

"I just didn't appreciate some of the comments made toward our pitcher," Roberts said. "Talking about one of my players in a very derogatory way. It's over. I probably got a little too emotional, but you get sensitive when guys are talking about your players."

"It really was not that malicious of a comment," said Green, who was fined. "At the end of the day, that's 100 percent factual. Yes, there was some sarcasm to it. I'd rather not get into any more details from last night."

Roberts, a former Padres coach who was passed over for their managerial job by Green, broke through Gibson's one-armed attempt to restrain him and Roberts also brushed into Holbrook and shoved Green before being restrained by Gibson.
