Mattingly wins one, loses one in pair of reviews
Safe call on pickoff overturned in third; run kept off the board in eighth
LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers trailed early in Saturday night's game with the Rockies, but manager Don Mattingly did his part to keep the team within striking distance with a successful third-inning challenge.
It was a busy night for Mattingly, who also challenged another call in the eighth when umpires ruled Dee Gordon did not cross the plate before the Rockies finished an inning-ending double play on a Juan Uribe fly ball. Mattingly lost that one, but the Dodgers were on their way to a 6-3 win.
As for the first challenge that Mattingly won, the Dodgers were trailing 1-0 with two outs, a runner on first and Nolan Arenado at the plate with a career-high 15-game hitting streak.
When Dodgers starter Paul Maholm threw over to first. Brandon Barnes, whose RBI single plated the game's first run, quickly moved back to the bag. But he misstepped and his foot appeared to land just short of the bag.
When first-base umpire Stu Scheurwater ruled Barnes safe, Mattingly, appearing to play off of Adrian Gonzalez pointing to the ground as if to say "Look at where his foot is", immediately trotted out to challenge.
The replay official in New York sided with Mattingly and overturned the call. So Barnes was picked off of first base, the inning ended … and the Dodgers immediately celebrated by popping for three runs in the bottom of the third to seize a 3-1 lead.
The eighth-inning challenge was a little more murky. The Dodgers led, 6-2, with one out and Gordon on third and Yasiel Puig on second. Uribe flied to right, and both runners tagged. Barnes fired a strike to Arenado at third base, nailing Puig.
The umpires ruled that Gordon did not cross the plate before the final out was made at third. Mattingly pled his case, and as it turned out, the crew wasn't even sure the play would be reviewable until a check with New York.
"They said it's only reviewable if they can get it all in one frame," Mattingly said, referring to the out at third and Gordon's proximity to the plate at that exact moment. "They did and they said he got him."
