LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers swapped starting pitchers for the first two games of this weekend series against the Padres, having Thomas Stripling start Friday night, with Rich Hill slated for Saturday night.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the change was partly motivated by matchups that would avoid having Hill pitch against Arizona next week. Hill is 0-2 with a 9.64 ERA against the D-backs this season.
"It just gives Rich an extra day," said Roberts. "There's a little matchup component. It's Arizona, but the more important thing is Rich has pitched a lot and we feel good about getting Ross into a five-day schedule."
The Dodgers haven't announced their starters for the Arizona series, but they are lined up to be Clayton Kershaw, Walker Buehler and Stripling.
First group of Legends named
The club announced that Don Newcombe, Steve Garvey and Fernando Valenzuela will make up the inaugural class of the Legends of Dodger Baseball and will have their careers celebrated during official induction ceremonies next season.
Starting in 2019, the team will induct Dodger greats into the Legends of Dodger Baseball in recognition of their impact on the franchise, both on and off the field. Inductees will receive a plaque honoring their Dodger achievements, which will also be on permanent display at Dodger Stadium.
The concept is a solution to the thorny precedent the Dodgers established by only retiring the numbers of players inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame, with the only exception being coach Jim Gilliam (19), who was a player and coach and died during the club's 1978 postseason push. Although the numbers of Newcombe (36) and Garvey (6) have been reissued over the years, no Dodger has worn Valenzuela's 34 since he was released in 1991.
Jarrin honored
Dodgers Hall of Fame Spanish-language broadcaster Jaime Jarrin, who received a two-year contract extension on Thursday, was inducted into the Dodger Stadium Ring of Honor in a pregame infield ceremony before Friday night's game against the Padres.
Fellow Hall of Famer Vin Scully, who retired after the 2016 season, joined current Spanish broadcasters Valenzuela and Pepe Yniguez in honoring Jarrin, who is in his 60th season with the Dodgers and contracted to continue through the 2020 season.
"He's been a dear friend of mine for 60 years," said Scully. "It has been an honor and a dear, dear friendship with one of the nicest men I have ever met."

Scully then walked with Jarrin into left field for the unveiling of Jarrin's microphone sign on the Ring of Honor by longtime Dodgers coach Manny Mota.
"I'd like to thank Dodgers fans, and most of all the Hispanic community," said Jarrin. "You have invited me into your homes and into your hearts."
Jarrin was inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame in 1998.
