SAN FRANCISCO -- The Dodgers pitching staff had its consecutive scoreless-innings streak snapped at 31 on Thursday, one shy of the Major League modern-era record for the start of a season.
After blanking the Padres for all 27 innings of the season-opening series in San Diego, they added four more scoreless innings before the Giants scored three times in the fifth inning against Dodgers starter Alex Wood, cutting Los Angeles' advantage to 4-3. The Giants eventually surged ahead and won, 12-6.
The record of 32 consecutive innings at the start of a season was set by the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals beat the Mets and Phillies before losing to Philadelphia, 4-3.
"You cannot be thinking about it, but at the same time it doesn't change anything I'm trying to do," said Wood. "Doesn't change my mindset at all."
The games against the Padres were started by Clayton Kershaw (seven innings), Scott Kazmir (six innings) and Kenta Maeda (six innings in his Major League debut).
"It was a good run," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. "We're not going to shut everybody out."
The San Francisco fifth started with a walk by Brandon Crawford and a perfect bunt single by pinch-hitter Kelby Tomlinson. The big blows were an RBI triple by Joe Panik and an RBI double by Buster Posey.
