Lefties sit against tough Giants southpaw

LOS ANGELES -- The day after Yasiel Puig was benched for showing up late, Puig arrived early and was back in a Dodgers lineup Don Mattingly stacked with right-handed hitters to face Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner.

Left-handed hitters Andre Ethier, Carl Crawford and Dee Gordon were replaced by Puig, Scott Van Slyke and Justin Turner.

"Scott hasn't played in a while and we've got to get him in the mix," said Mattingly. "This guy [Bumgarner] is tough on lefties and righties, but he's not a fun at-bat for any lefty. Just trying to match up the best I can with our personnel and their personnel."

The lone left-handed-hitting position player in the Dodgers lineup was first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who is 2-for-20 lifetime against Bumgarner. Ethier is 3-for-24, Crawford 0-for-3, Gordon 2-for-5, Puig 2-for-9 and Van Slyke 0-for-2.

Mattingly said he didn't encounter from Ethier or Crawford the disappointment Matt Kemp expressed when told Friday he was not in the original starting lineup, even though Kemp ultimately started because of Puig's benching.

Mattingly implied that the media is making more of the four-outfielder logjam than he believes is necessary.

"I kind of feel they both thought maybe they wouldn't be playing because of the matchup," Mattingly said of Ethier and Crawford. "We'll get into a stretch with no off-days when somebody needs a breather. I don't think it will be as complicated as it sounds."
