Dodgers successfully challenge early call

CINCINNATI -- Dodgers manager Don Mattingly successfully challenged a play at first base in the first inning of Thursday's series finale against the Reds.

With Los Angeles trailing, 2-1, nobody out and a runner at second, Brandon Phillips hit a sharp ground ball to first that went off Adrian Gonzalez's glove and ricocheted right to second baseman Dee Gordon, who threw to Zack Greinke covering. The ruling on the field was that Phillips was safe.

After review, the call was overturned and Phillips was ruled out. Joey Votto moved to third on the play, but was left stranded after Greinke induced a groundout from Jay Bruce and struck out Devin Mesoraco.
