SAN FRANCISCO -- The Dodgers' starting-pitcher shuffle will continue into next week, as manager Dave Roberts filled out the probables for the upcoming series against Miami.
After indicating that Hyun-Jin Ryu and Alex Wood would start Thursday and Friday, Roberts named Julio Urias to start on Saturday and Brandon McCarthy on Sunday. With Rich Hill having pitched on Tuesday and Clayton Kershaw on Wednesday, that's a six-man rotation.
But wait. Roberts said he expects Kenta Maeda to come off the disabled list and join in the fun during the Dodgers' series with St. Louis next week. Roberts has said several times recently that he intends on returning to a five-man rotation, but he hasn't indicated how that will happen, especially when Maeda returns to make seven.
A scheduled day off on Monday will further complicate things, as Kershaw starts on Tuesday on one extra day of rest. Roberts hasn't said when Hill will start again coming off his sharp five-inning return from the disabled list on Tuesday night.
"Sometime against St. Louis, we'll get Kenta back in the rotation," Roberts said. "That gives him an extra day, and we want to keep Kersh in line, so he's slated for Tuesday. Giving Mac an extra day makes sense."
Roberts said Adrian Gonzalez (elbow, back) and John Forsythe (toe, hamstring) came out of their Tuesday night rehab game with Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga healthy, and they were expected to play another rehab game Wednesday night.
"After tonight, we'll evaluate and see," said Roberts. "For me, I still think Adrian is a little ahead of Logan as far as coming back to us."
Roberts said he will continue using Yasiel Puig as his primary starting right fielder because of his defense, even though Puig's offense has been inconsistent. Although Puig is tied with Cody Bellinger for the team lead with seven home runs, Puig is hitting .159 with a .406 OPS against left-handed pitching, and he is batting only .212 with runners in scoring position.
