NEW YORK -- The Brewers placed right fielder Domingo Santana on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder soreness on Friday before their series opener against the Mets at Citi Field.
"It was just a case of him not making any progress with his shoulder," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "With two weeks off, hopefully that will get rid of it."
Santana was scratched from the Brewers' lineup on Thursday and has dealt with tightness in the same shoulder throughout the month. Santana is hitting .239 with three home runs in 36 games this season.
In a corresponding move, Milwaukee recalled outfielder Keon Broxton from Triple-A Colorado Springs, and he was in the starting lineup playing center field against the Mets.
Broxton was the Brewers' Opening Day center fielder, but he was sent down to the Minors on April 16 after starting the season 0-for-16 with 11 strikeouts.
Over 25 games in Triple-A, though, Broxton hit .301 with seven home runs, 18 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.
"I had to take it for what it was," Broxton said. "I didn't really perform the way that I wanted to, so I had to take it as I have to get better regardless of where I am."
Worth noting
• Ryan Braun (back stiffness) was absent from the Brewers' lineup for the third consecutive game. Counsell said that the club has not ruled out the outfielder for the entire weekend series against the Mets, but noted the disabled list could be a possibility if he does not play this weekend.
• Matt Garza (right lat strain) threw a bullpen session on Friday and said he felt "great." He also said that he is scheduled to throw another bullpen session on Sunday.
