Mattingly, Gardenhire each win challenges

MINNEAPOLIS -- Managers Don Mattingly of the Dodgers and Ron Gardenhire of the Twins each successfully challenged an umpire's call in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader, which the Dodgers won, 9-4.

Mattingly's challenge in the bottom of the fifth inning resulted in a double play on defense for the Dodgers.

With runners on first and second, no outs and two runs already in to cut the Dodgers' lead to 5-4, Trevor Plouffe lined out to shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who flipped the ball with his glove to second baseman Dee Gordon covering as Brian Dozier dove headfirst back into second base.

Umpire Tim Welke ruled Dozier safe, but Gordon was sure the throw beat Dozier to the bag and signaled the dugout to challenge the call. A few moments later, Mattingly came onto the field and the call was overturned after review. It was the Dodgers' third successful challenge this year.

"I knew I got to the bag first," said Gordon.

Gardenhire disagreed.

"What we were told about a catch was that it had to go into the palm of the glove, and not just the webbing," Gardenhire said. "Our pictures showed the ball was in the webbing and in the front of the glove while Dozier's hand was going to the bag. So there's no way the ball was in the glove, so to me there's just not enough evidence to overturn that."

The Twins put runners at second and third with two outs in the eighth, keyed by Gardenhire's successful challenge on a forceout at second base that was overturned after replay determined Gordon dropped the throw from Ramirez. But Chris Perez struck out Sam Fuld to end the inning and the scoring threat for Minnesota.

"Late in the game, we know it's going to go the other way if you drop it," said Mattingly.
