Mattingly waiting to name starter for Sunday

CHICAGO -- Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said on Friday that "every guy in the bullpen and Dan Haren" are options to start Sunday's series finale against the Cubs.

Haren, however, threw a short bullpen session Friday, an indication that the club's preference is for him to start Monday night's game against the Giants. That means the bullpen would be tasked with handling Sunday's game against the last-place Cubs.

Mattingly did say, however, that the final decision won't be announced until after Saturday's game, when slumping Roberto Hernandez starts for the Dodgers. The right-hander will likely be on a long leash, because eating innings will be just as important as minimizing runs allowed.

The rotation was thrown into turmoil when Carlos Frias lasted two-thirds of an inning on Wednesday in Colorado. Frias was making the spot start in place of Hyun-Jin Ryu, who still hasn't picked up a ball since leaving last Friday's game in San Francisco after one inning. Although Monday would be Frias' turn in a five-day cycle, he could still be given the ball on Sunday.

Frias allowed eight runs on 10 hits vs. the Rockies, throwing 38 pitches. Besides Frias, the only other pitcher in the Dodgers' bullpen to have started this year is Kevin Correia, who has been hit hard in most of his eight appearances since being acquired from Minnesota. Correia, however, is 4-2 with a 3.66 career ERA at Wrigley Field.
