Downs outrighted; Petit accepts assignment

Both players will be non-roster invites to Spring Training

HOUSTON -The Houston Astros have announced the following roster moves:

  • Left-handed pitcher Darin Downs has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple A Fresno. Downs, 29, made a career-high 45 appearances with the Astros in 2014, finishing second on the club with 10 holds. The left-hander struck out 27 batters in his 34.2 innings while holding opponents to a .226 (28x124) batting average. Downs was claimed off waivers by the Astros from Detroit on Nov. 1, 2013. He has been invited to Spring Training.
     
  • Infielder Gregorio Petit, who was designated for assignment on Dec. 16, has accepted his outright assignment to Triple A Fresno. He also has been invited to Spring Training. Petit, 30, hit .278 (27x97) in 37 games for the Astros in 2014 with two HR and nine RBI. He spent most of the season at Triple A Oklahoma City where he hit .297 (94x317) in 85 games with 10 HR and 43 RBI.

The Astros 40-man roster now has 39 players.
