It's Like a John Hughes Movie

"James Tate has skills, and I applaud the "Ducky" inside him."

I lived in Huntington, CT for a good part of my life. Huntington is a small town right next to Shelton. Earlier this season, I wrote about Shelton being the home of Wiffle Ball…but wait, there's more! Shelton is back on the map again. This time, however, it is getting press for a completely different game: the game of love.

James Tate, a Shelton High School senior, is just like any other guy this time of year. He is looking for his prom date and like a classic John Hughes character, wanted to make a big impression on the object of his desire. So, the lovestruck Romeo created a signon the side of the school's outer walls to ask Sonali Rodrigues if she would do him the honor of accompanying him to the spring ritual. This young man has skills, and I applaud the "Ducky" inside him.

Sonali accepted James' offer, but Shelton High School is now banning the senior from the prom as a disciplinary action for his ask-out technique. Where is your heart, Shelton High? This kid should be the keynote speaker at graduations everywhere! He is a hero to male teens across the country! He is the Lloyd Dobler of his generation (I know, that was a Cameron Crowe reference, but you get my point).

I'm gonna have to protest this call! Awful. Let the kids dance!

I went to my prom and was tied in knots the week before asking my date to go. I wish my boy James had been there to help. His motto seems to be "Go big or go home!" And I would have welcomed his coaching!

I look back fondly at my time in the Nutmeg State, but this is not the Shelton I knew as a kid. Come on, folks. Reverse the call…oh and GO VIKINGS!
