HOUSTON -- After being plunked by a 92.3-mph pitch in the seventh inning, Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was removed from Boston's 6-5 win and left Minute Maid Park to receive X-rays at a nearby hospital, manager John Farrell said after the game.
"The pitch hit him in the left lat area, left rib cage," Farrell said. "It continued to swell and tighten up. He was losing a lot of range of motion with his left arm, so we had to get him off his feet. But we'll have a better read once he goes through the exam here at a local hospital.
"When we examined him down in the tunnel, it was clear he had to come out."
Pedroia was one of two consecutive Red Sox to be plunked by Astros reliever James Hoyt in the seventh inning.
It is unclear how severe Pedroia's injury may be and if he will have to spend the remainder of Monday morning in Houston, Farrell said. The Red Sox begin a three-game series at Kansas City on Monday.
"We'll know more after the X-rays," Farrell said.
