Encarnacion's hitting streak reaches 26
Slugger tied for 2nd-longest mark in Blue Jays history
TORONTO -- Edwin Encarnacion was back to his old tricks Monday night, extending his hitting streak to 26 games with a single in the sixth inning off Indians starter Danny Salazar, who outdueled David Price in a 4-2 Blue Jays loss.
Encarnacion is now tied with Shannon Stewart (1999) and John Olerud (1993) for the second-longest streak in franchise history. The record belongs to former outfielder Shawn Green, who had a 28-game hitting streak in 1999.
Toronto's veteran slugger extended his impressive run on the same day he was named the American League Player of the Week. Encarnacion earned that award after hitting six homers with 17 RBIs and a .391 average (9-for-23) in six games last week.
Encarnacion has the longest streak in the Majors this season, and it's the longest by anyone since Colorado's Nolan Arenado had one that lasted 28 games in 2014. It's also the longest streak in the AL since Ichiro Suzuki hit in 28 consecutive games during the 2009 season.
The on-base streak for Encarnacion is even longer, reaching 31 games. Even more impressive is that he has reached base at least twice in 20 of his last 28 contests.
