Encarnacion named AL Player of the Week
First baseman hit four home runs, including the 200th of his career
After ranking among the best in baseball in home runs and RBIs from May 5-11, Blue Jays first baseman Edwin Encarnacion has been named the American League Player of the Week.
Over seven games, Encarnacion was tied for the Major League lead in home runs (four) and RBIs (10), while leading the league in slugging percentage (.893) and total bases (25). Overall, he hit .321 last week, with nine hits in 28 at-bats. Encarnacion doubled twice, tripled once and scored five times.
It's Encarnacion's second career weekly award, previously winning for the week ending Oct. 3, 2010.
Encarnacion hit his 200th career home run on Thursday in a two-homer game against the Phillies. It was his first multihomer game since July 26, 2013, and the 12th of his career.
On Wednesday, Encarnacion had two extra-base hits -- a home run and a triple, both in the seventh inning -- to become the first player in franchise history to record a triple and a homer in the same frame. The last Major Leaguer to do so was Cleveland's Luis Rivas in September 2007.
Encarnacion leads the Blue Jays with 27 RBIs this season, seventh best in the AL.
Other players recognized for their performance this week were Seattle's Dustin Ackley and Chris Young, Texas' Elvis Andrus and Yu Darvish, Cleveland's Michael Brantley and Asdrubal Cabrera, Detroit's Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Max Scherzer and Kansas City's Eric Hosmer.
