PEORIA, Ariz. -- New manager Andy Green was quick to name the Padres' Opening Day starter, tabbing Tyson Ross during the first week of camp.
On Thursday, Green got the jump on naming the first two pitchers who will take to the mound on Wednesday when the team opens the Cactus League schedule against the Mariners in Peoria.

Two pitchers who are on the bubble in terms of making the rotation will get the first look, as left-hander Robbie Erlin and right-hander Luis Perdomo will each throw one inning against Seattle.
The Padres have settled on the first three pitchers in their 2016 starting rotation -- Ross, James Shields and Andrew Cashner -- but the remaining two spots are up for grabs.
Erlin is 8-10 with a 4.60 ERA in 27 career games with San Diego (23 starts). He impressed the staff late last season with his last two outings in September, allowing two earned runs over 14 innings against the D-backs and Dodgers.
Erlin and Drew Pomeranz, obtained from the A's in December, are the only lefties who are in camp with a reasonable shot at cracking the rotation. Pomeranz might end up a better fit in the bullpen.
The Padres landed Perdomo in a trade from the Rockies shortly after the Rule 5 Draft in December, as he was plucked from the Cardinals. Perdomo is 22 and hasn't pitched above Class A but has electric stuff.
Pitching coach Darren Balsley was very impressed with Perdomo -- the team's No. 9 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline -- during the team's minicamp at Petco Park last month.
"He's really interesting," Balsley said. "There's no reason in the world why this kid won't pitch in the big leagues. He has a good arm stroke, good velocity and his secondary pitches are good. It's just a matter of him executing those pitches."
Perdomo must remain on the 25-man roster the entire season or be offered back to St. Louis for $25,000. San Diego will allow him to get stretched out in camp and give him innings this spring, which will then help them decide more easily if he can stick on the roster.
The rest of the Padres' pitching schedule for the first game against the Mariners will be announced closer to the game.

• Relievers Kevin Quackenbush and Fernando Rodney, slowed early in camp by hamstring strains, will take to the mound for the first time on Friday or Saturday, Green said. Green said there's plenty of time for both pitchers to get innings and the injuries aren't of great concern.
