CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Evan Longoria left the Rays' 6-1 win over the Phillies after fouling a ball off his left shin in the first inning on Thursday.
"It hurt so I thought it best to get some ice on it," Longoria said via email Thursday evening. "Nothing serious."
Tampa Bay's All-Star third baseman will be re-evaluated on Friday.
"He'll be day to day," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "If he comes in tomorrow, we'll probably DH him, see how he feels."
That was good news for the Rays, given the bad karma on St. Patrick's Day at Bright House Field. A year ago, Alex Cobb pitched three perfect innings at the Phillies' spring home before having to leave the game with elbow tightness that turned into Tommy John surgery.

The Rays third baseman fouled a ball off his left shin while batting against Phillies right-hander Vince Velasquez. The diagnosis for Longoria was a left-shin contusion.
Longoria played the field in the bottom of the first, but he did not go back out to his position in the second.

"I think it just got pretty sore," Cash said. "He squared it up pretty good. Hit right above his shin guard."
Cash said that Longoria did not have any X-rays.
"He was walking around fine," Cash said.
Richie Shaffer took over at third after Longoria left the game and hit his first home run of the spring in the eighth inning.
