• Manuel said he hopes he gets at least 140 games each with Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. "If we get 145 or whatever, that's OK, too," he said. "I'd like to think if we got 140 games out of both of them; that'd be a good number. That's 540 at-bats or something. If they played 162 games in the middle of the order, they'd get 650 at-bats."

• Right-hander Phillippe Aumont will compete for Canada in the World Baseball Classic, but that will not hurt his chances to make the Phillies' bullpen. "We're going to have plenty of time to see Phillippe," pitching coach Rich Dubee said. "Plus, we're going to have eyes on Phillippe when he's pitching there. There's no effect at all."

• Dubee said they would try to take the best three pitchers for the three remaining bullpen jobs, although they would prefer to have some balance among right-handers and left-handers.
