Extra bases

• Welington Castillo was scratched from the lineup Monday against the White Sox because he was feeling ill, and Luis Valbuena was inserted as the designated hitter.

Sveum wanted to have Alfonso Soriano as the designated hitter, but he changed course after outfielder Scott Hairston was traded earlier in the day to the Nationals.

"Fortunately or unfortunately, Sori was going to play either way, but I can't give his legs a day off," Sveum said.

Soriano began the day batting .342 in his last nine games, with three doubles, five homers and 14 RBIs. He then went 3-for-4 with a homer, four runs scored and a walk in the Cubs' 8-2 victory.

• Brian Bogusevic, sidelined with a sore left hamstring, is making progress but is still not available to play in the outfield.

"Each day, he's been better and better," Sveum said.

Sveum said he was hesitant to use Bogusevic as a pinch-hitter "unless he walks around the bases."

• Double-A Tennessee's Matt Szczur, Arismendy Alcantara, Christian Villanueva and Kyle Hendricks were named to the Southern League North Division All-Star team, and all of them will start the game. Szczur will bat leadoff and play left field, Alcantara will bat second and start at shortstop and Villanueva will bat seventh and play third base. Hendricks will start the game, to be played July 17.
