Familia comes up short in Final Vote results
NEW YORK -- If Jeurys Familia is letting the disappointment of not making it to the All-Star Game presented by T-Mobile bring him down, he's not showing it. Familia skipped through the Mets' clubhouse Friday afternoon, jabbering with locker room sage Bartolo Colon as he went, less than an hour before voting closed on the 2015 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Final Vote.
Familia has said that he plans to spend the break with his newly expanded family -- his son, Jeurys Jr., was born June 12 -- if he wasn't selected to the game. And now it's official. Barring an injury that warrants a replacement, Familia won't be participating after finishing the polling in last place, the position he held since being named to the ballot Monday.
After locking down Friday's 4-2 win over the D-backs, Familia has 25 saves and a 1.31 ERA and was just one of a quartet of strong candidates to finish behind Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez. Martinez benefited from a sizzling final-day surge to leapfrog Reds starter Johnny Cueto and finished ahead of Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw, Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, and Familia.
During the All-Star Game presented by T-Mobile in Cincinnati on Tuesday, July 14, fans can once again visit MLB.com to submit their choice for the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet. Voting exclusively at MLB.com, online and via their mobile devices in the 2015 All-Star Game MVP Vote presented by Chevrolet, the fans' collective voice will represent 20 percent of the overall vote that determines the recipient of the Arch Ward Trophy.

It's perhaps unfair that Familia stays home while five other closers represent the National League, at least statistically. His 25 saves are tied for fourth in the Majors, and his batting average against stands at a stingy .179. He's posted six more saves than Milwaukee's Francisco Rodriguez, and 11 more than Philadelphia's Jonathan Papelbon, both of whom benefited from the rule that requires each team to have an representative.
