Fans to enjoy Petco Park's upgrades in 2014

Petco Park is celebrating its 10th anniversary this season.

The design of the ballpark, however, is 15 years old.

Over the past winter, the Padres completed Phase II of a program to upgrade and invigorate the Padres' downtown home.

The program started over the offseason of 2012-13 with the projects to shorten the fences in right field and left-center, add the Jack Daniel's deck in right field, move the visiting bullpen from the field to a position above the Padres bullpen in left-center and begin addressing deferred maintenance issues.

When the 2014 season opens Sunday night, visitors to Petco Park will notice improvements to the audio and technology systems, expanded concession opportunities, a new video board for fans and a new finish for much of the exterior decking.

And the Padres are far from finished.

"We are still putting together a master plan for all the things we want and need to do," said Padres president and CEO Mike Dee.

Among the improvements planned for the near future is the replacement of the main video board in left.

"We are committed to building the overall experience of Petco Park," said Dee. "The owners have made enhancing Petco Park a priority since they took over. We are working in three areas: 1. Deferred maintenance, 2. Technology, 3. Customizing."

One of the problems facing the Padres is time. All annual changes to Petco Park must be completed in a six-month window between seasons. And the new owners inherited a number of delayed maintenance programs when they took over in 2012.

"We are aggressively addressing deferred maintenance while improving Petco Park for a better future," said Dee. "We are very excited for what Petco Park is today and what it will be in the future."
