Farrell thrilled to see son drafted

BOSTON -- Red Sox manager John Farrell had a well-timed rainout on Friday. It allowed him to fully savor the fact that his son Luke, a right-handed pitcher out of Northwestern University, was selected in the sixth round of the First-Year Player Draft by the Kansas City Royals.

"An exciting day," Farrell said. "Proud of him for what he's been able to come back from, what he's accomplished and excited for his next chapter in baseball. I know he's excited to join the Royals."

Luke Farrell twice had a benign tumor removed, and had to undergo radiation treatment but is completely healthy now.

The Royals selected Luke Farrell one pick after the Red Sox took center fielder Jordon Austin.

"There were discussions all about that," John Farrell said about the possibility of Luke being taken by Boston. "I think we're, as a family, all in agreement for him to blaze his own trail as the other two have. Like I said, we're proud of him."

John Farrell's other two sons are also in pro baseball. Jeremy is an infielder in the Pirates' farm system. Shane is an amateur scouting assistant with the Cubs.
