Five third basemen in one game ties MLB record

PHOENIX -- The Padres made some history in Tuesday's 10-9 loss to the D-backs in 10 innings, as they used five different third basemen in the game.

That matched a Major League record -- records have been kept since 1921 -- set by the Phillies on Aug. 6, 1971.

Chase Headley started the game at third base but left after the fourth inning with stiffness in his back. Logan Forsythe and Alexi Amarista saw time at the hot corner in the fifth and sixth innings.

Jedd Gyorko and Jesus Guzman each saw time there the rest of the game, often flipping back and forth between second base depending on the batter and the situation.

Gyorko and Guzman actually switched between the two positions five times in the final three innings of the game.

"I was watching it, they had the TV on in the training room," Headley said. "It was something unusual for sure. It's not what you hope for, but at least we had the versatility to do it. It's something that you can look back on and laugh at it."
