PHOENIX -- Daniel Hudson is no longer with the D-backs, but the Pirates reliever is well aware of how his former team is doing this year.
"I get done with our team on the East Coast, and the first thing I do is pick up the phone and see how the Diamondbacks are doing," Hudson said. "I do it every night. It's hard not to. You spend so much time in one spot, you root for them to do well, except for obviously this weekend."
Hudson came to the D-backs in July of 2010, from the White Sox, and was the longest-tenured player in the Arizona clubhouse at the end of last season.
When Hudson filed for free agency following 2016, he had some discussions with the D-backs, but signed a two-year, $11 million deal with the Pirates.

"Timing is everything in free agency, and the time frame I was looking at trying to sign, [the D-backs] weren't ready at that point," Hudson said. "This group of guys has been fantastic and pretty welcoming. I feel like I have the type of personality that can kind of mesh anywhere in any clubhouse, so it's been fun."
The four-game series with the D-backs gives Hudson a chance to spend time with his wife, Sara, and their two daughters at their home in Chandler, Ariz.
With the D-backs, Hudson could stay home during Spring Training and the regular season, but the Pirates train in Bradenton, Fla., in Spring Training, so that was a big adjustment for him.
"We got so spoiled in Arizona, where you do Spring Training and sleep in your own bed for 280 nights," Hudson said. "So it's definitely taken some time to get used to."
Still up in the air
On Thursday, the D-backs still would not commit to Zack Godley getting another start, despite the fact that he allowed just one run over seven innings against the Tigers on Wednesday.
Manager Torey Lovullo said the team was still working through some things.
