Former Oriole and World Series Champion Scott McGregor will visit with campers

Former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Scott McGregor will talk to summer campers about sportsmanship at Sarasota County's Summer Camp at Laurel Park, 509 Collins Road, Laurel, on Monday, June 16, from noon to 1 p.m.

Approximately 130 campers will hear McGregor talk about why having respect for others and themselves is an important part of achieving success.

McGregor spent all 13 years of his major league career as a left-handed pitcher with the Orioles, winning 138 games with a lifetime earned run average (ERA) of 3.99. He was inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1990 and ranks among the club's all-time leaders in wins (138), innings pitched (2141.1), shutouts (23), games (356) and strikeouts (904).

Among the many highlights of McGregor's career was winning 20 games in 1980 and pitching a shutout in Game 5 of the 1983 World Series when the Orioles defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, four games to one.

Sarasota County Parks and Recreation's summer camp program hosts more than 3000 children each year. The day camps feature weekly themes that allow campers to have fun, make friends and enjoy new experiences with physical activities, creative arts, science and nature, and safety and wellness events.
