Four Major League umpires to instruct at 2013 MLB umpire camp

MLB Urban Youth Academy will host eighth annual umpire camp from Nov. 3rd - 10th; Registration available at MLBUC.com

Four Major League Umpires have been appointed to serve as instructors at the 2013 MLB Umpire Camp, which will be held from November 3rd-10th at the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton, California.

This year's MLB Umpire Camp will be led by first-time instructor Marty Foster, along with returning instructors Mark Carlson, Marvin Hudson and Kerwin Danley. The umpires will be joined by many other representatives of Major League Baseball's Umpiring Department, including Rich Rieker, Director of Umpire Development, along with MLB Umpire Supervisors, officials from Minor League Baseball's Professional Baseball Umpire Corporation (PBUC), and six Minor League umpires, who will help administer all aspects of the Camp.

"The MLB Umpire Camps at the Urban Youth Academy is about showing people that there are other avenues to get involved in baseball aside from being a player," said Major League Umpire Kerwin Danley. I would love to see one of our aspiring umpires at the Camps reach the Major Leagues one day. I have always enjoyed instructing at the camp and appreciate the opportunity to share the skills and experiences I've had with those who are interested in my profession."

The MLB Umpire Camp assists umpires in furthering the advancement of their college, high school and little league umpiring careers and also serves as a preparatory course to those considering a career as a Major League or Minor League umpire. The Camp provides world-class umpire training, going beyond classroom instruction and field work to also focus on rules interpretations, positioning, conditioning, nutrition, safety and equipment.

Throughout the 2013 regular season, Major League Baseball offered free, one-day umpire camps across the country, giving promising attendees the chance to earn a scholarship to the 2013 MLB Umpire Camp; the final one will be held in Los Angeles on November 2nd from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. (ET). This will be the eighth year in a row that a free, one-day camp has been offered to Los Angeles-area umpires.

Promising attendees from the 2013 MLB Umpire Camp will be offered scholarships to one of the two professional umpiring schools in Florida, Wendelstedt Umpire School or The Umpire School, in January 2014. More than 60 graduates from past camps have gone on to attend one of the professional umpiring schools, and were later offered jobs in the Minor Leagues.
