NEW YORK -- The second round of voting results for the American League All-Star team showed improvement for Seattle, but the surprising Mariners still look like long shots to have a player selected as a starter for July's Midsummer Classic in Washington, D.C.

Second baseman Dee Gordon remains the highest-ranked Mariners player as he stands third at his position. Jean Segura, who ranks second in Major League Baseball with a .340 batting average, moved into fifth place in voting among AL shortstops.
Additionally, Mitch Haniger advanced from 13th to ninth in the outfield voting, while Ben Gamel moved into 15th place.
With Robinson Cano not on the ballot after being suspended for 80 games, Gordon has taken over at the keystone and has received 244,488 votes, trailing rookie Gleyber Torres of the Yankees (534,758) and AL batting leader Jose Altuve of the Astros (1,572,101).
Gordon began the year in center field, and is leading the AL with 19 stolen bases while batting .290 for a Mariners club that has 46-26 record.

Segura (312,407) certainly deserves to be considered in the loaded AL shortstop race, where he replaced Andrelton Simmons of the Angels in a top five that is topped by Manny Machado (671,133) of the Orioles, Carlos Correa (458,367) of the Astros, Francisco Lindor (420,674) of the Indians and Didi Gregorius (413,135) of the Yankees.

Even in that ultra-talented group, Segura entered play on Tuesday leading all AL shortstops in batting average and hits (98), tied for first in stolen bases (14), second in runs (52) and doubles (21) and third in RBIs (44), on-base percentage (.363) and WAR (2.9) according to Baseball-Reference.
Haniger's outstanding season is also being noticed by more voters as he made up ground in the outfield race. The 27-year-old is tied for second among all AL players in RBIs with 53 while hitting .269 with 16 home runs. Gamel also saw increased support as he's posted a .297/.371/.406 line.
One surprising omission among the voting leaders is designated hitter Nelson Cruz, a five-time All-Star who has come on strong in recent weeks and now has a team-leading 17 home runs for Seattle with 40 RBIs.
Pitchers aren't part of the fan balloting process, instead being selected along with backup position players by managers, coaches and player votes. Starter James Paxton and closer Edwin Diaz figure to be logical Mariners selections there, while Marco Gonzales has also put up numbers worthy of being in the conversation as well.
Fans may cast votes for starters at MLB.com and all 30 club sites -- on computers, tablets and smartphones -- exclusively online using the 2018 Camping World MLB All-Star Ballot until Thursday, July 5, at 8:59 p.m. PT. On smartphones and tablets, fans can also access the ballot via the MLB At Bat and MLB Ballpark mobile apps. Each fan can vote up to five times in any 24-hour period, for a maximum of 35 ballots cast.
Following the announcement of this year's All-Star starters, reserves and pitchers, fans should return to MLB.com and cast their 2018 Camping World MLB All-Star Final Vote for the final player on each league's roster. Then on Tuesday, July 17, while watching the 2018 All-Star Game presented by Mastercard live on FOX, fans may visit MLB.com to submit their choices for the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet with the 2018 MLB All-Star Game MVP Vote.
