PITTSBURGH -- Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli, being monitored for post-concussion symptoms, was cleared to begin light cardiovascular activities on Tuesday, head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk said on Wednesday.
Cervelli sustained a concussion on June 6 in Baltimore and went on the seven-day disabled list the following day. After being cleared by the club and Major League Baseball, he was activated on June 14. Cervelli played four games before returning to the seven-day DL with post-concussion symptoms along with what Tomczyk called "post-viral" symptoms.
Cervelli did not sustain a subsequent concussion, Tomczyk said; his symptoms were exacerbated by playing. Cervelli was seen by a group of physicians in Pittsburgh and cleared for some physical activity. He then rejoined the team at PNC Park on Tuesday, when he spent 20 minutes riding a stationary bike.
"What's most important is Francisco's feeling better. What's most important is that he's getting the care that he needs to get at this point in time," Tomczyk said. "We will continue to leave no stone unturned to ensure short- and long-term health for Francisco."
With that in mind, the Pirates are not setting a firm timeline for Cervelli's return to baseball activities. Tomczyk said the club will handle his recovery "differently," but not necessarily more slowly, than earlier this month.
Meadows on the mend
Top prospect Austin Meadows will miss 2-4 weeks due to a strained right hamstring, Tomczyk said. Meadows has been sidelined since June 22 due to the injury, a repeat of the hamstring strain he sustained last season. Meadows has moved his rehabilitation to the club's Pirate City complex in Bradenton, Fla.
"The goal is to get him strong now, strong next year and the years after," Tomczyk said.

With Esurance All-Star Game Ballot voting closing on Thursday, manager Clint Hurdle stumped for three of his players: second baseman Josh Harrison, starter Ivan Nova and reliever Felipe Rivero. Given Andrew McCutchen's recent surge at the plate, Hurdle said, perhaps Pittsburgh's franchise player merits further consideration as well.
"I think we've got three guys that from start 'til now are all worthy in Harrison, Nova and Rivero. I think Andrew probably got some attention here late," Hurdle said. "It's a big outfield picture, can be crowded, however the overall numbers have settled into a pretty good place."

Harrison has not appeared in any of the All-Star balloting updates, reflecting the fans' vote for the Midsummer Classic starting lineups. But he still could crack the roster, which will be revealed on Sunday, as pitchers and reserves are selected through the player ballot and by the Office of the Commissioner.

Draft deal
The Pirates on Wednesday signed third-round Draft pick Dylan Busby, a third baseman from Florida State University. Busby agreed to a $575,000 signing bonus, according to MLBPipeline.com's Jim Callis, below the slot value of $626,600.

The Bucs have now signed 35 of their 42 picks, including each of their first 13 and 17 of their first 18. Their top unsigned selection is 12th-round infielder Hunter Wolfe. Pittsburgh signed sixth-round right-hander Cody Bolton for $300,000, Callis reported on Tuesday, surpassing the slot value of $255,900.

Five players from the Pirates' Double-A Altoona affiliate were selected to play in the Eastern League All-Star Game: outfielder Jordan Luplow, third baseman Wyatt Mathisen, injured second baseman Kevin Kramer and right-handers Alex McRae and Montana DuRapau.
