Pirates left-hander Francisco Liriano will not make his scheduled start against the Tigers on Wednesday night due to right hamstring discomfort. The club revealed on Tuesday that right-hander Ryan Vogelsong will take the ball instead at PNC Park (7:05 p.m. ET game time).
Liriano's status is day to day. The 32-year-old has started twice this season, tossing six scoreless innings against the Cardinals on Opening Day, then allowing three runs over five innings at Cincinnati on Friday. He threw 90 pitches in the start against the Reds, walking four and striking out three in a no-decision.
This will be the first start of the year for Vogelsong, who signed a one-year deal with the club in the offseason but did not make the rotation. His lone appearance in 2016 came Friday, when he picked up a victory in relief of Liriano, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit over two innings, with two walks and no strikeouts.
Vogelsong has made 165 starts in his career, including 132 for the Giants over the previous five seasons. His last start for Pittsburgh came in 2004, during his first stint with the club.
