Cooper exits, day to day with tight hamstring

July 31st, 2019

MIAMI -- Marlins first baseman Garrett Cooper was taken out of Tuesday night's 2-1 loss to the Twins at Marlins Park after just two innings, with a tight left hamstring. He is considered day to day.

"It's been sore the last couple of days," Cooper said. "I played through it. It's just something. It pulled up a little tighter today. I didn't push it. It just tightened up."

While the 28-year-old added that he's not overly concerned about the hamstring and hopes to be back either Wednesday or Thursday, Marlins manager Don Mattingly wasn't as confident.

"Not quite sure where that leaves us," Mattingly said. "Not sure if that's a couple days, a week or what that is."

Cooper grounded out to shortstop in his one at-bat in the first and didn't see any balls hit to him in the field. Cooper is a vital part at the top of the order for the Marlins' offense, hitting .294 on the season, with 11 home runs and 38 RBIs.

"Seems like kind of on a daily basis, either the groin or the hammy … lower body issues. Little bit all the time," Mattingly said about the cause of Cooper's hamstring tightness.

Third baseman Neil Walker moved to first while Martin Prado entered the game to play third base.

Prado struck out twice and flied out to right field while batting in Cooper's spot in the lineup.

While Miami had some big hits from left fielder Curtis Granderson -- including two doubles, one which drove in Starlin Castro for the lone run of the game -- Cooper's bat has proven to be a consistent part of a struggling Marlins offense.

Cooper has a .294/.362/.472 slash line and 21 extra-base hits on the season. He has also notched at least one hit in 15 of 23 games in July and in 47 of 68 games played in 2019.
