Jones might get RF starts for Yanks in Miami

BALTIMORE -- Garrett Jones spotted his name on the Yankees' lineup card on Sunday, playing right field in the finale of a three-game series at Camden Yards. He could continue to see duty out there with the Yankees heading to the expanses of Marlins Park in Miami.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi is considering playing Jones over Carlos Beltran for the pair of road Interleague games against the Marlins. The 38-year-old Beltran has had trouble getting to balls at times this season and was involved in a misplay on Friday in Baltimore, when a ball fell between him and Brett Gardner.

"You know, I have to make a decision," Girardi said. "Carlos has been our right fielder. I'm giving 'G' a day today, but my plan is for Carlos to be our right fielder."

Girardi acknowledged that Beltran does not move as well as he did when he was a Gold Glove center fielder earlier in his career, but he said that the Yankees will continue to play him for his bat while replacing him defensively late in games.

"We knew when we got him, he wasn't the center fielder he was back in the day. We knew that," Girardi said. "Our ballpark being a shorter distance between home and right, it doesn't play in as much. But you get to some of these other parks and it plays in a little bit."

Alex Rodriguez's transition to a full-time designated hitter has afforded Girardi fewer opportunities to offer half-days to Beltran, who is batting .244 with four homers and 23 RBIs in 51 games. Girardi said that he has not had any issues with Beltran's effort.

"It's always there," Girardi said. "I know Carlos is not a guy that plays like his hair's on fire, but he's playing hard. Carlos was a Gold Glove center fielder and probably at times he looked like he was gliding to the ball. That's just the way he runs. And I think sometimes people can mistake that for effort. The effort is there."

While Beltran's situation is uncertain for the next two days, the upcoming contests in Miami could provide Girardi with an opportunity to rest Rodriguez. Girardi said that his plan is not to use Rodriguez -- who is closing in on 3,000 hits -- defensively against the Marlins, leaving him to duty as a pinch-hitter.

"My plan is right now, no, but everything is always subject to change," Girardi said.
