Stanton, Marlins need ASG help; Ichiro a candidate?

June 15th, 2016

SAN DIEGO -- The Marlins are having a competitive season, remaining over .500 and within striking distance of their National League East rivals. But when it comes to the All-Star voting results, Miami is being shut out.
Giancarlo Stanton, the Marlins' three-time All-Star right fielder, had been the organization's lone player ranked among the voting leaders. But in Wednesday's NL ballot update, Stanton fell out of the top 15 outfielders. Still, there are several Miami players worthy of consideration, including third baseman Martin Prado and outfielders Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna.
The Marlins also have perhaps a sentimental choice, Ichiro Suzuki, who isn't on the ballot. Fans can name Ichiro as a write-in candidate.

Ichiro is aiming to reach several milestones, including 3,000 MLB hits.
"He's not playing every day," manager Don Mattingly said. "But I think there have been instances where you know a guy's in their last year that they'll take those guys.
"But I know Ich has talked about playing for another seven years or something. So I'm not sure he fits into that last-year category. But he's having a tremendous year for us so far."
